More birds at Milford Pre-School
Many schools take part in RSPB Schools’ Birdwatch but for children at Milford Pre-School, birdwatching is a year round activity. The school has bird boxes and a sparrow lodge, and children have enjoyed watching sparrows roosting in the boxes, nesting and raising young. Teacher Sarah Rix is keen to get a webcam inside the sparrow lodge next year. Children are encouraged to identify birds and posters of those found on the small site are pinned in an outdoor play area.
How to teach number and graphs? These children carried out a bird survey and filled in tally charts that allowed them to produce the simplest of graphs. Children carried out enjoyable work with birds in a lovely environment and then used their findings to help the development of their mathematical skills. Brilliant!
