Susie Laan is an artist living in the New Forest. She is passionate about helping to save our elephants from extinction and spoke to two groups at New Forest Small School about her very real concerns for elephants and what she intends to do about it. She explained that in 2015 she took part in the ‘Enormous Elephant Run’ in London held to raise awareness and money for the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Their excellent website shows how important the work of the Trust is. http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org
Children learnt that despite a ban on the international trade in ivory, elephants are being poached in large numbers and tens of thousands are killed every year for their ivory tusks. In fact it is one every 15 minutes! Ivory costs more than gold.
Susie also explained that she is holding an art exhibition whose details are shown on this leaflet. New Forest Small School are really interested in taking part in the exhibition. It provides a real opportunity for children to show off their artistic talents alongside the work of established artists and sculptors, whilst helping these venerable animals to stay alive.
