Birds at Milford
Milford Pre-School children enjoy the grounds of the adjacent primary school and teacher Sarah Rix makes sure that children derive full benefit from the facility. The grounds have an ‘African hut’, an open building with benches inside that provides some respite from the heat of the sun. Teachers are very mindful of the damaging effects of the sun on young skin and children always appear with hats in summer!
To the children’s delight, a pair of swallows built a nest in the apex of the roof of the hut. Eggs were laid and in due course, four youngsters hatched out. The tots of the pre-school could not have been more respectful. While they desperately wanted to watch the parents feeding their young, they kept their distance, and contained their enthusiasm! They were rewarded by the birds fledging – unfortunately on a Saturday. Then the strangest of events occurred; following a chilly and rainy Sunday, the four fledglings reappeared in their nest! What a lesson for young children.
